More real life distractions
Yesterday was a double header. I went to a funeral in the afternoon, and I took my son to a viewing in the evening.
The funeral was for the mother of a woman in my church congregation. She had had her eightieth birthday in the spring so a lot of the stories and one song were repeats. The power went out at one point, but came back on before the end. It was raining cats and dogs at the end of the service which lasted over an hour.
My husband started complaining about the service as soon as we got back to the van. The only odd thing I had noticed was a mention of her weight. She was a big woman but so what. I started thinking about it, and there was a bit of a wierd vibe. They talked about her battles with poverty, with her husband, with her kids and with the nursing home staff. They weren't really battles though, just real life. There was also a mention of her financial affairs and hoping that everything would go OK that way. The youngest son is still living in the family home. We didn't bother going to the gravesite even though it was on the way home.
My son's friend died while go-carting. This happened while he was out with two of my son's closest friends. My son said that he was even thinking of going with them as he had been feeling better that night. He has been deeply distressed by this, especially on hearing the news and attending the viewing. His friend was two weeks short of his eighteenth birthday. They think it was his heart. After we got back, he went out for his first bike ride in at least a week.
