A club I really didn't want to join
I am now a member of a club that I really didn't want to join, the "my parent is in a nursing home" club. The second week of my summer vacation my sister called 911 for my mother. When she checked on Mum before she left for work, she found her incoherent. After three weeks in hospital, Mum had a full out stroke and lost the use of her left side.
In October, the hospital transferred Mum to an temporary nursing home that had opened next door. When you bump into other people visiting their mom or dad, they just smile at you like you're sharing a secret. No words are necessary. We both know that the roles have been reversed, the parent is now the child and the child is the caregiver.
